About Us

Pragmatic Social Action (PSA) is a nonprofit organization registered in Kenya, committed to advancing community-driven development and influencing policies that address the real needs of marginalized groups, including vulnerable women and girls, older persons, and underserved rural communities.

PSA has earned recognition for its role as the secretariat for the Kenya Platform for Climate Governance (KPCG) in western Kenya, where it leads grassroots mobilization, builds local capacity, and drives climate resilience strategies in line with national and global climate governance goals.

Vision

To foster sustainable, empowered, and resilient communities that are central to equitable development and climate justice. We envision a future where marginalized groups, the elderly, vulnerable women and girls, and grassroots stakeholders are active participants in decision-making processes—driving transformative actions that harmonize social, economic, and environmental well-being.

Mission

To empower communities through advocacy, capacity building, and collaborative partnerships to tackle pressing social, economic, and environmental challenges. PSA is dedicated to promoting inclusive participation, advancing climate justice, and championing sustainable development practices that improve livelihoods and strengthen resilience at the grassroots level.

Key Areas of Work

1. Climate Governance
As KPCG’s western Kenya secretariat, PSA facilitates inclusive stakeholder engagement, policy advocacy, and knowledge sharing. We collaborate with civil society, community-based organizations (CBOs), and local governments to advance policies that promote fairness and justice in climate action.

2. Community Empowerment
We equip communities with the knowledge, tools, and platforms to meaningfully participate in climate action and sustainable development. PSA promotes climate-smart practices that improve livelihoods while conserving the environment.

3. Partnerships and Advocacy
PSA actively forges alliances to mobilize resources and amplify grassroots voices in regional and national policy dialogues. Our advocacy work ensures that local realities shape policies that affect communities.

4. Capacity Building
We conduct targeted training and workshops on climate governance frameworks, sustainable development strategies, and inclusive participation—empowering stakeholders to act effectively and sustainably.

Our Programmes

Our work revolves around four main programme areas:

A. Livelihoods

  • Income Security – Engaging county and national governments, communities, and development partners to design and implement income-generating projects for rural farming and pastoral communities, as well as vulnerable women, men, youth, and older people.

  • Climate Emergency Recovery – Mobilizing cash transfer schemes to help communities recover faster from climate-induced disasters, boosting resilience and coping mechanisms.

B. Environmental Care

  • Promoting the circular economy by mobilizing grassroots communities to manage waste—especially plastic—while engaging value chain actors, retailers, and policymakers to create a zero-waste ecosystem.

  • Contributing to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through sustainable consumption and production practices.

C. Advocacy

We push for inclusive policy formulation and programming in:

  1. Climate Change – Advocacy for strong climate adaptation and mitigation policies.

  2. Adaptation Programmes – Promoting climate-smart agriculture in arid and semi-arid areas.

  3. Health – Campaigning for equitable access to quality healthcare.

  4. Water and Sanitation – Community sensitization on hygiene, as well as prevention of sexual and gender-based violence.

  5. Inclusive Development – Ensuring marginalized voices are represented in all development processes.

D. Locally-Led Climate Action

  • Large-scale tree planting and forest restoration initiatives.

  • Plastic waste management and recycling projects that create livelihoods while protecting the environment.

  • Adaptive climate-smart farming that enables rural communities to earn from sustainable agricultural practices.
