Turkana to maximise use of green energy

The Department of Energy and Petroleum in Turkana County has moved to maximise the utilization o green energy with the launch of two solar energy projects at Katilu and Lolupe.

Initially, the solar energy systems were deployed to provide water and lighting for community and government institutions.

Following successful implementation, the initiative has now been expanded to support small businesses, including barbershops, salons, milling stores, electronic charging stations and mechanical workshops.

The Deputy Director of Energy and Petroleum, Geoffrey Eregae, expressed appreciation for development partners like Practical Action, acknowledging their role in unlocking Turkana’s socio-economic potential.

“The global shift towards renewable energy is driving sustainable livelihoods in Turkana County,” he said, adding, “This initiative enhances service delivery and economic resilience.”

According to Engineer George Kimutai, Practical Action’s assessment revealed that excess solar energy was being generated, but underutilized.

To address this, AI-integrated solar machines were installed in Katilu and Lolupe to efficiently store and redistribute surplus energy.

As part of the project, each of the two communities has received five solar-powered banks, two milling machines, a full-time water supply, and energy for security lighting.

This initiative is expected to transform employment opportunities, unlocking Turkana’s economic potential by promoting sustainable and independent business ventures.
