How drought is bringing despair to herders in Turkana

Turkana people have raised livestock for a living, grazing their sheep, goats, cows, and camels on open rangeland over the years. Usually, two annual rainy seasons ensure there’s enough grass to keep the millions of animals healthy. But things are fast changing. Droughts spells have increased in frequency, hundreds of thousands of animals have died of hunger, thirst, and disease.
There has always been drought, but this one is the worst in my lifetime because it has killed so many animals, and the problem is spreading to humans – we are getting sick. Read more
